Where You Will Lose Points:

COPPA

NOTE: The following is critical. If any 2 of the Point Deduction criterion are found, your site will be disqualified. Any one of them will result in a significant deduction of points:

Point Deductions - 2 or more results in DSQ

Vistors and Evaluators alike can't wait forever for your site to load. Slow loading time on a broadband connection – more than 15 seconds - will lose you points. Slow loading time on a dial-up connectsion - more than 90 seconds - will lose you points. We will allow more time for full Flash sites, but your site must load correctly & function properly over a dial-up connection.

While we understand that most websites are developed for optimal viewing in 1024 x 768 resolution, there are still some visitors who set their monitors at 800 x 600. Your site should be free of the horizontal scroll bar in 800 x 600 resolution.

If we find 4 broken external links, site you will lose points. We will, however, go back and check again to see if it is just a temporary server issue.

Make certain you check your site for broken internal links. If we find 1 broken internal link, you will lose points.

Visitors (particularly those who are visually impaired or who use text-only browsers) appreciate proper and meaningful ALT attributes on graphic images. If more than 5% of your images are missing ALT attributes or lack meaningful ALT attributes, your site will lose points. NOTE: Images such as spacers that are empty (have "" assigned as an ALT attribute) are not considered having a missing ALT attribute.

If your website has difficult navigation and/or dead ends (pages where there is no way to get back to the previous page without using the browser "BACK" button) you will lose points. We would also like to see a way to return to the "Home" page from each page on your site. Standard, easy navigation is a big PLUS for us! Poor or confusing navigation will cost you points - and visitors...

If your website does not contain a FULL WRITTEN copyright statement, you will lose points. First, we like to see that you've notified visitors of the Copyright policies that pertain to the content of your website. Secondly, if you've used material (e.g., scripts, graphics, photographs) from others, we like to see that you've given them proper credit.

NOTE: If any 1 of the following criteria is found by any of our evaluators, your application will be disqualified (DSQ). We will send you the DSQ reasons in our notification and you can apply again after 90 days only after you've addressed the disqualifying issues.

Disqualification Criteria's

We like family friendly, child safe sites that don't use vulgar, profane, or discriminatory language. We will NOT evaluate sites that are considered to be of an evil nature and/or advocate cruelty to animals or people.

Mouse Trailers and/or Comet Cursors are annoying and do not enhance the visitor's experience. DHTML scripting that changes the scroll bar to a different color or the cursor to a pointer - if tastefully done - will be accepted as long as they do not alter the browser behavior after the visitor leaves your site.

Site containing pornography , Warez or any illegal content or activity will be disqualified immediately. This includes sites with "Adult Only" type jokes and/or graphics. PLEASE NOTE that this also pertains to external links on your site. If you are linking to sites that contain any of the material mentioned above, your site will be disqualified.

We love our pets, kids, grandkids, and people in general and websites that promotes cruelty or abuse to humans or animals will cause us to disqualify your site immediately.

We love original graphics and content. We evaluate a lot of sites each month and as such become very familiar with recurring content or images. If we discover copyright infractions including but not limited to text, scripts, graphics and images we will disqualify your application. Also note that you will lose points if you don't have a FULL WRITTEN copyright statement.

You must have a dedicated page in which to display your award(s). We understand that, perhaps, ours is one of the first awards you may be applying for, but we do require that you have a dedicated page in place to display your award. AS CLARIFICATION: Award graphics/icons randomly displayed (without dates or laudations) on your Intro Page, Home Page, What's New Page or Press Release Page, etc., does NOT count as a dedicated awards page. Our Evaluators take their responsibilities very seriously and they donate a lot of their time to this program. If you are serious about earning an award, we'd like to know that you are interested in displaying it proudly on your website!

The first level of evaluation is done by an old gal and unreadable text on your web pages will result in a disqualification. By "unreadable text", we mean any of the following: text that is too small to read in 1024 x 768 resolution; insufficient contrast between background and text; a "busy" background that clashes with the text; text with too much variation in size, type and color.

There is a place for frames on a website but they must be used correctly. If you use frames correctly, they have benefits. But, if your frames do not function properly, your site will be disqualified.

Websites that are comprised of nothing more than external links and/or ads will be disqualified.

Websites that reduce or disable the visitor's browser functions will be disqualified. This includes sites that maximize the screen by eliminating the browser buttons & address bar and forced plug-ins.

We expect that your site will load and display properly in our browsers. If it is apparent that your website does not function properly or there are serious errors in the way your pages display, your site will be disqualified.

If your website causes our computers to crash or freeze, the evaluation will be ended. We will go back and try again, but if it happens a second time, your site will be disqualified.

We don't like to find broken code on web pages. Examples of this are elements of a tag, for example, that are displayed on a page.

Websites that contain involuntary pop-up or pop-under Ads will be disqualified. A few Google ads, that pertain to your subject matter, are acceptable as long as they are child-safe.

Sites that contain excessive animations (more than 2 per page) will be disqualified. This includes scrolling banner ads and text.

When we see websites with a pleasing design, we'd like to see it continued throughout the site. We call that design continuity or flow, and it makes for an enjoyable visit. If your design varies drastically from page-to-page, your site will be disqualified.

Websites that have 2 or more broken internal links will result in a disqualification.

Image: Red arrow bullet If your website has 5 or more broken external links, it will be disqualified.

"Under Construction" or "Coming Soon" pages will result in a disqualification.

Disabling the browser's right-click function does NOT stop people from stealing your images. The only thing it accomplishes is to annoy your visitors by altering their browser behavior. And, in our case, it will cause your site to be disqualified.

There is no excuse for horizontal scroll bars in 1024 x 768 and it will result in a disqualification.

If you have hot-linked images on your website, you will be disqualified. Hot-linking is stealing bandwidth from others and it could ultimately cause their website to be shut down if their bandwidth limits have been exceeded. If you don't understand what hot-linking is, please read this article: WHAT IS HOTLINKING?

We would like to see at least 5 pages of quality content on your website. "Quality content" does not include awards pages, guest books, favorite link pages, forums, or Blogs. Websites with less than 5 pages of quality content will be disqualified.

A Flash intro can be great, but please provide a means to SKIP it. The sames goes for music - please provide a means to turn it off. If we can't skip your Flash Intro or turn off your music, we'll have to disqualify your website.
Up to Top of Page
There are times when a page must be longer than normal and we recognize that. If you have long pages, please include Top of Page links. Ideally, we'd like to see several throughout the page, when applicable, but there must be a Top of Page link at the bottom (at least), or it will result in a disqualification.

Everyone wants to be assured their privacy is going to be respected. If you collect personally identifiable information on your website - and this INCLUDES email addresses - then you must have a Privacy Policy posted on your website or you will be disqualified.

Children are our heritage and we expect all websites, notwithstanding their country of origin, to conform to the overall concept of COPPA if the website is directed to children or children could be drawn to it and have the ability to respond.

Your site must have a copyright notice in some form. "Copyright © 2001-2004 ABC Company All Rights Reserved" is marginally acceptable. Without a copyright notice your application will disqualified.

You must be at least 17 years of age in order to apply for our award. If you are under 17 years of page, we will not accept your application.

We are currently only accepting site that are in English or that have an English version.

We are currently not accepting Unofficial Fan sites.
